Hi Guys,
I need some advice on how to deal with a "removed disk".
Short story: FreeNAS reports disk "removed by administrator" and a degraded pool (with sufficient replicas). Recent SMART test of this disk gave no indication of an upcoming problem. Another failure would destroy my pool, I have therefore shut down my FreeNAS. I can survive without it some time.
What should I do next?
1. Should I and if so how can I test the disk independent from FreeNAS?
Long Story:
My Setup: ProLiant Microserver Gen 8, 16GB RAM, 2 redundant boot thumb drives. My pool consists of 2 vdevs, each a mirror of 2 each of 6TB WD Red and 3TB Red. The removed disk is one of the 3TB disks. These are little over 2 years old with 9 months of warranty remaining.
Today 03:39 I got an alert:
I checked this in FreeNAS. The pool was degraded but functional. The disk is shown "Unused". The removed disk is ada0. Yesterday the disk looked just fine in my daily SMART report from 08:03, see below. Today there was no SMART report for this disk (possibly due to the fact that the drive was removed / detached).
I then checked dmesg (also see below). In the end I found some "detached" message and "ATA Status Error" for ada0. How to interpret this is beyond my capabilities however.

- Is there an easy way to test this without any other PC in my home? I have only MacBooks and MacBook Pros here. I do have a USB drive enclosure if this helps.
- I never bothered to have another OS available to boot on my FreeNAS machine. Maybe I can remove the other disks and the boot thumb drives and boot another system? If this is a good idea: What OS should I use? Something suitable for disk burn in would be best in case I actually need to replace with a new disk.
- The Server is a ProLiant Microserver Gen 8. ILO reports a perfectly healthy system. (Whatever this is worth I can't tell though.)
- Cables? The drive sits in a drive bay which connects directly to the disk.
- Controller? Shouldn't this then affect other drives as well?
