Just wondering how an HP DL580 setup
Specs:
4 quad core cpus (16 cores) @ 3ghz
32GB ecc (error corrected) ram
4x146GB 10k enterprise grade sas HDDs

..would do compared to my current setup in my sig ..?

I'm mainly doing Plex with streaming content to up to 3 devices in house, and 9 "freinds" that I am sharing my collection with.

older beefier vs newer lesser spec'd

vague memories tells me these HP DL5x are of 'server-non-grata' for freenas. Check the cyberjock newbie primer on hardware.

Which generation is it?
Generally speaking, it looks ok, but it probably depends on the specifics (CPU and HBA configurations).

Hardware recommendations thread:

What not to do...

So I've told you what stuff you should get. Here's stuff you should NOT get:

  • Hardware that is older than the Intel Sandy Bridge (older stuff burns LOTS of watts)
  • Anything that doesn't use DDR3 or newer RAM (DDR2 and FB-DIMMs are just too expensive to try to upgrade later)
.. a little spendier to upgrade and uses more power... this is a server that is being sold locally for $150 OBO for everything ..

I missed the part about the comparison to your existing machine. I wouldn't bother with the new machine, unless your current cpu is having issues keeping up with the transcoding loads.
