I am new to FreeNAS. I have built my own computer in the past...although it's been a while (2009) but I would like to put together a NAS for my home for pictures, videos, documents storage and set up a source for streaming media to our many devices (PC, Mac, chromebook, iPhones, iPads, smart TVs, apple TV). I would like to have remote access to these files also. At some point I'm also considering hosting a website.

These are the components that I have either selected or parts that I already have on hand. I would appreciate any insight on this. Are these components compatible with FreeNAS and will they work to accomplish my goals.

1. COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UB Black /Blue Aluminum Bezel , SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
2. SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SL7-F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel C222 DDR3 1600
3. Intel Xeon E3-1220V3 Haswell 3.1GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1150 80W Server Processor BX80646E31220V3
4. (3-5) WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX
5. Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3L 1600 (PC3L 12800) Server Memory Model CT2KIT102472BD160B
6. 100% Original SanDisk Cruzer Fit USB Flash Drive SD CZ33 16GB mini Pen Drives USB 2.0 Support official verification
7. Power supply - still looking for this. Ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Why are you using Haswell parts instead of Skylake?

Why are you using Haswell parts instead of Skylake?

No specific reason...simply from recommendations from other websites. Is Skylake better?

Yes. If pricing is similar, there's no good reason to use Haswell instead. Check out the hardware recommendations guide in the resources section (also linked in my sig).

Thanks! So...I did some more looking and this is what I came up with. Had to change the MOBO to accommodate the skylake CPU. Any additional thoughts?

That's not ECC RAM. Look at the QVL for appropriate models.

My bad. I guess I overlooked that. The QVL only lists Samsung ($200/16GB, expensive), Micron (which I can't find anywhere) and Hinx (sp?) No Idea what that is. How much RAM do you recommend? I was looking at 32 GB with the thought of adding additional RAM later on if needed. I found this Crucial one that seems to fit the bill but how do I know if it will work?
Crucial CT16G4WFD8213 16Gb Ddr4 2133 Mt/S Pc4-2133 Dr X8 Ecc Unbuff Dimm 288Pin Cl15

Seems like overkill. At least get rid of the iGPU and probably save cash.

How much is overkill? What about this one?

Intel Xeon E3-1230 v5 3.4 GHz Quad-Core LGA 1151 Processor

That's fine, assuming it's some 30-50 bucks less.

It's about $100 less!

I appreciate your help!
So here is my final build list:

1. COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UB Black /Blue Aluminum Bezel , SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case (I already have this)
2. SUPERMICRO MBD-X11SSH-LN4F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1151 Intel C236 ($239)
3. Intel Xeon E3-1230 v5 SkyLake 3.4 GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1151 80W BX80662E31230V5 Server Processor ($251)
4. Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan ($34)
5. (5) WD Red 4TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD40EFRX ($145 ea = $725)
6. Crucial CT16G4WFD8213 16Gb Ddr4 2133 Mt/S Pc4-2133 Dr X8 Ecc Unbuff Dimm 288Pin Cl15 ($137)
7. SeaSonic SS-1050XP3 1050W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply ($169)
8. SanDisk Cruzer Fit USB Flash Drive SD CZ33 32GB mini Pen Drives USB 2.0 Support official verification ($18) Boot Drive
9. Arctic Silver Thermal Compound $8

Total = $1573
$79/TB

Any Additional Thoughts?

A few additional comments:
1 - You don't need the CPU cooler. The stock cooler is fine.
2 - Any reason you are going with USB boot devices? That MB has 8 SATA ports. I'd use the saved money from the CPU cooler and pickup a cheap SSD like this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01F9G414U/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
3 - Your P/S is probably a bit overkill... I like the product line (I own the 660), but the 660 or 860 XP2 will be cheaper and serve you just as well.

I was going to say the same. I have a 450W power supply in my Mini-ITX build with 6 3TB WD Reds, and it's got plenty of headroom with that. 1050W seems like it's going to put him way under nominal operating range for that power supply during normal runtime.

Thanks for the input.
I was wondering about the P/S.
I changed the P/S to the 660 XP2 and removed the CPU cooler.

What is the advantage of running a SSD vs a USB boot drive? If I need to increase storage in the future it would be nice to have those available SATA ports.

SSDs are more reliable than USBs... generally. You can work around that by mirroring your USBs

Got this system up and running! It looks good so far. I've created a volume with RAIDZ with datasets for media and documents. I also set up a Plex media server that seems to be running smoothly. My next step is to set up a personal cloud to have access to files and folders on the go. I see that there are two plugins that are available, owncloud and nextcloud. Any recommendations or tips for these?

For a new setup, I'd go with Nextcloud. The core devs from ownCloud moved to Nextcloud, and Nextcloud is protocol-compatible, so you can use the ownCloud clients for Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS and Android with Nextcloud, as I understand it.

Thanks. That is what I understood from doing a bit of research on the two. Nextcloud seems to be the way to go. Are there any guides to help me with installation and configuration? I haven't found anything that is straight forward (I am somewhat tech savvy but still fairly new at all this.)
