Hello, I am fresh here, Just built my first TrueNAS PC and thought i made a good selection of hardware.
But now I decided I want plex so i can watch shows and movies when I am away from home.
Not sure the existing hardware is adequate. Sometimes I might be at a hotel viewing 4k movies on a 720p Tv.
I tried to play a 4K movie today while i was at work to test it out, and there is buffering issues. Looking at the performance tab, it appears as the CPU is maxed.
I pay for 100Mb Internet but Download Tests around 75Mb/s and Upload 8.52 Mb/s.
I can probably upgrade the internet service, I think my upload is way too slow for 4k, but should be able to scrape by on 1080p.
My existing hardware is:
Audheid 8-Bay K7 Chassis.
Asus Prime H310m-c R2.0 Motherboard
Intel Core i3-8100 Cpu @ 3.6Ghz
20GB 16+4 Non ECC Ram.
8x 8TB Toshiba N300 Hard Drives setup in a Z1 Pool with a 256GB SSD Cache.
256GB M.2 Boot SSD.
500W Power Supply.
I am running Truenas Core Version TrueNAS-13.0-u1
And Plex 13.1Release-P2 And I am a PlexPass Subscriber.
Now I have two spare computers here, One is my current gaming rig, I plan to upgrade soon. I have been waiting to see what AMD does to the current market when they release their new chips later this month and to see what Nvidia 4000 series can do.
One pc has a Ryzen 7, 2700x, 16GB RAM, on a Asus B450-f Gaming Motherboard.
The other PC has a Core i5-10600k with 32GB RAM on a MSI Z-590 Motherboard.
Another question, Can i use a dedicated graphics card for transcoding? With this case i am limited to low profile cards, but I have a spare Quadro NVS 510 on hand, or a could order a Quadro P400.
