Hello everyone, new to FreeNAS. Have an old WD Sentinel DS5100 I'm planning to build into a media server, but running into issues. Will search the forum for answers, but any direction is appreciated. Mirrored install on USB flash drives, but none of my storage drives show up. Not sure of next moves.

I'm no expert, but trying to lookup the hardware information for those one thing sticks out. All the storage drives are hooked to some kind of RAID controller and FreeNas does not like that. FreeNAS needs direct access to a disk, RAID instuctions get in the way and there are many threads here about people using RAID controllers reporting the same problems.

That's what I figured, the issue is figuring out what the controller is, or any of the hardware for that matter. WD doesn't make any of that information available. Going to play around in BIOS and see if I can't figure out a way to disable the RAID controller or set it up as JBOD, maybe then FreeNAS will be happy.

Do the drives have data on them now? If so, they won't be compatible with FreeNAS.

You can find some specs vis this URL: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...0040kbk_nesn_sentinel_ds5100_4tb_rack_mt.html

It's hard to say if that thing will work with FreeNAS or not. I'd do some Google searches and see if anyone has used one with an alternate (to the original) OS.

No the drives are all brand new. There's not much info about this system even with the standard OS it comes with. I was using it as a small office server but Windows Server started having a bunch of issues so I replaced it with another system. Hoping I can find a different OS that works better and FreeNAS is tops on my list. I know it will let me install Debian Linux which makes me more think it's a hardware compatibly issue.
