good morning / afternoon / evening / what have you!

so i'm in the planning stages of building a system using a""recycled"" HP RP5800 SFF computer. it's got 2x3.5 Bays and a 5.25 Bay. it's got a second gen Core i5 at 3GHz with 16GB of RAM (it's maxed out). the system requirements are vague so I have no idea if it's going to work - I'm literally just using it for backup storage. ideally, I want to drop 2 WD Blue 4TB for storage itself and have a WD Green 120GB SSD for boot. - that's for "cold storage" of stuff I may need periodically and not mission critical

secondly - I'm also planning doing another NAS that's all SSD but it's based on a HP ProDesk 600 G2 with a sixth Core i3 with 64GB of RAM (I have three of these) . it's got 2x3.5 bays and a dedicated 2.5 bay. ideally, I want to have 2x2.5 SDDs in brackets for the 3.5 bays so 4 SSDs for storage and use the dedicated bay for boot. the question I had is - would the 4 Port PCI Express 2.0 SATA III 6Gbps RAID Controller Card from Startech.com work with FreeNAS? its got the Marvell - 88SE9230 chipset. (I have one for my ESXi box that's' based on a Lenovo M920Q and I dont use the RAID feature)

any and all pointers / comment towards helping/ etc is appreciated.

Your RP5800 system will probably work.

I advise you to avoid the Startech/Marvell RAID controller card. FreeBSD (FreeNAS/TrueNAS) support for it will be spotty at best. It may or may not work...

You can pick up an LSI 9210/9211-8i HBA (or equivalent) for cheap on eBay. These cards are well-supported by FreeBSD (FreeNAS/TrueNAS) and come highly recommended here on the forum. Connect it to 4 SATA devices using a single SFF-8087 to SATA forward breakout cable plugged in to one of its two ports, and you're off to the races.

Good luck!
