Hello fellow FreeNAS users.

I hope someone can help me figure out a CPU for my new TRUENAS build.

I've been using TRUENAS as a VM in PROXMOX for a while, but since storage is becoming more and more important, I want to set up a separate server for this.

Some of the hardware I still had lying around and some of the hardware I will have to buy.

my setup so far:

* case: inter tech 4u-4408

* MOBO: ASUS WSC246M PRO

* RAM: 64GB ECC Samsung.

* 4x 6TB WD-RED.

* 1x 250GB NVME/boot

* 2x 1TB SSD Samsung

As more or less already indicated, this server will only be intended for data storage and sharing (NFS, ISCSI)

So no VMS and APPS.

Is the ZFS performance dependent on the CPU or could a Celeron 2-Core be sufficient for storage only?

Thank you in advance.

CPU choice opinion follows:

Minimum 4 core (8 thread)
In order of importance:
  1. most modern (E5-V4 over E5-V3)
  2. base clock (will always run at this speed or better)
  3. boost clock

Pentium Gold or Core i3 for Socket 1151 v2 (LGA) should suffice, since both have ECC support.

Core i3-8100 for examples has 4 Cores (but no HT which is ok imho) and 3.6GHz base clock.
2 Cores could be enough but it really depends on your use cases...

PS:
use case "zfs with encryption" : no problem for Pentium Gold or Core i3, both support AES-NI.

Thnx voor reacties!

Ik heb veel gevonden voor Intel Xeon 2146g, dus ik hoop dat ik nu klaar ben voor de toekomst.

Tnx!
