its all in the Title. Will it work? I have read on some forums and one blog post that this motherboard doesn't seem to like to support Devil's Canyon CPUs even with a BIOS update... or if it does some power features are lost.

so in Short has any one tried this?

And also is the rest of my build compatible? Link to PCPartPicker

(note: before someone asks why I am using a G3258 it's because I have one collecting dust on shelf and since it supports ECC, why not use it?)

Well, yes. It will work. It'll work great.

One problem though, that you MUST be aware of: The G3258 requires the latest BIOS. Or at least version 2 BIOS. There are (plenty) of X10SLL boards out there in inventory that still have the old v1 BIOS on them. If you get one of those, the board will not POST with the G3258.

SO what you need to do, is check your BIOS version, or be prepared to either:
a) borrow a CPU so you can boot up and flash the BIOS, or
b) Pay SuperMicro their $30 fee (or whatever) to use the IPMI BIOS flasher.

Once I get all the parts in and put together I'll come back and say how well it all worked!

I'd be really interested in whether or not it worked for you. Planning on doing this same build soonish.

I have not been able to fully assemble the the box yet but I was able to burn in test the HDDs (as This Post suggests) and they all came out good, with 0 errors.

I'll be sure to get back to this thread with the final results as soon as I can!

Sweet. Looking forward to it ^_^

I am responding as promised! There's nothing I dislike more then an unfinished thread.

All the parts should be in by Saturday (2/27) and so I'll get back here again to let you know the hardware compatibility results!

I also changed my part list a little bit so here is the updated one: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/fsnszy

Good luck iPlex. I just picked up the X10SLL-F and will be selecting a processor soon. G3258 would be ideal if it works because of the good price that Micro Center has on it. Otherwise, it seems like I'll be paying $20-30 more at another vendor for a different processor.

Well I got everything put together and and when I power it on it wont POST and the CPU fan tries to spin every few seconds but doesn't, so I guess I lost the lottery on getting a board with v2 BIOS.

------------------------EDIT-------------------------

I found where I could buy the OOB BIOS Management and I've ordered it and awaiting for my order to be processed!

------------------------EDIT 2-------------------------
Preface: When I tried booting the first time all I had was the 8 Pin, 24 Pin power connected, and the Processor + RAM it wouldnt POST.

So I ordered the software thing and they were taking a long time to process my order so I decided to play around with the box so I plugged in all the HDDs and the one system Fan and guess what?

It Booted perfectly!

Nice!

What BIOS is on your X10SLL-F?

When you said you "ordered the software thing" does that refer to option B from DrKK? [b) Pay SuperMicro their $30 fee (or whatever) to use the IPMI BIOS flasher.]

EDIT: Saw your comment about losing the v2 lottery.

Yes, I am referring to option B from Drkk, but it turns out once I plugged in the Hard Drives and the chassis fan it booted fine, my guess is that the motherboard needs a HDD plugged into to boot.

As for the BIOS version, sorry I cant check because I had to put the box into production so I can't reboot into BIOS and check.

Note: you can not buy the IPMI BIOS flasher (the technical name of it is OOB BIOS Management) directly from SuperMicro, you can only get it from a re-seller.

I'm just curious here, but did you place this machine in production BEFORE
testing the RAM installed on this motherboard? If you tested the RAM, I missed it
and you can ignore my question ;)

I'll admit I didn't do a burn test on the RAM.

Almost impossible. In fact, impossible.

If your X10 board did not attempt to post-POST boot, then the problem isn't the hard drive missing. Reasons X10's won't get to POST:

1) No fan connected to FAN1 or FANA (I have not experienced this myself, but I certainly have encountered dozens of users who, once they attached a CPU fan, got a POST and boot, whereas before they had no poweron response)
2) The BIOS does not support the CPU SKU, and requires an update. In this case, the motherboard simply does not power on at all.
3) One of more power connectors to the motherboard is not attached; sometimes results here are unpredictable. It may POST weirdly, may not POST, etc.
4) An electrical condition, or PSU voltage rails out of specs or not present.

I am 100000% sure X10's and so on do not require a HDD to get past POST. Of course, if there's no bootable thing on there, it won't actually boot, but it will certainly go past POST.
