I wish Seagate well, and would love to see more competition in the drive manufacturing sector... but I wouldn't touch these (or any other Seagate product) with a 10-foot pole. :)

If they can develop a decent reputation over the course of the next 2 or 3 years, I might consider trying a few of them.

I have a whole bunch of Seagate ST2000DM001 and ST6000DX000 "desktop" drives still going strong.

I've had 3 out of 6 Barracuda ST1000DM003 desktop units fail. Not a large enough sample to be statistically significant... but personal enough that it's left me a little wary of Seagate drives, which the scathing reviews on Amazon and Newegg only reinforce.

This specific model is known for sudden, early failure. I wouldn't let that put me off all Seagate drives.
Aren't you thinking of the 3TB model S3000DM001? Mine are the 1TB models.

Anyway, you're right. I shouldn't hold a grudge.

Seagate = no thank you. I won't use them, even if free. Like the other gentleman says, I'll need to see 2-3 years of all the models working well before I'd consider it.

By the time you have 3 yrs worth of data, they may well have a new model -- or perhaps the same model number with different internals

Well, WD Greens/New Blues have been mostly the same for 5-6 years now, with apparently incremental changes only.
