Hello,

I'm planning to buy a GenHP ProLiant MicroServer 8 G1610T, 1P, 4 GB-U,
and want to run Freenas 9.3 on it for my office.

I want to use 3x 3TB WD Red, two disks mirrored in an RAID-1 and one as a backup.

My question is:

The HP Microserver has a built in Raid-Controller (Dynamic Smart Array B120i).
Is it better two use the Raid-Hardware-Controller or to build a mirrored zfs pool?

As my understanding of ZFS a mirrored pool would be better.

Greetings

You need a minimum(!) of 8GB RAM for FreeNAS.

You should never(*) use a hardware RAID controller with FreeNAS, and that probably needs to be replaced with an HBA unless it can be bludgeoned completely off-and-disabled so that it looks like standard SATA ports.

(*) Certain exceptions to this rule do not apply here.

That "RAID" solution, IIRC, is actually just typical PCH fakeRAID with some additional HP stuff. Easily disabled.
