Hello. I have Hp Proliant Gen 8 with 4x3TB HDDs. I dont know if this isnt just another stupid question but im really curious about it... Is it better to turn off server every once in a while or just leave it on? I feel like when i dont plan to use it for more than 2 days i turn it off. Sometimes it runs for weeks and i shut it down for like 2 days and turn on back again for several weeks. Will it harm hardware or software in any sense? (in company where i work we have one server running freenas 9 and its been working like for months.. only thing that make it tur off is power outage) What is better: to leave it run "forever" or turning it off? Thanks

Just leave it running. For one thing it will limit the wear and tear of your drives. I only stop my server for maintenance (cleaning up the dust bunnies etc.) every 6 months or so.

Leave it running so all your scheduled maintenance tasks runs as they should.

This is pretty typical for a SAN at my work.... though the storage servers aren't too far off from that.
