hi

My FreeNAS server is not using all 16gb of ram as per the screenshot attached. Its causing 6 autocad users working from the server simultaneously to crash every few mins.
What could be the issue?

system specs:
cpu: intel xeon e3-1230 v5
motherboard: asrock E3C236D4U
ram: crucial 16gb ddr4 ecc
hdd: 4x3tb WD red in raid 1+0 (configured in FreeNAS, this is not hardware raid)

thanks

hi, welcome to the forums.
1. screenshot missing.
2.
hdd: 4x3tb WD red in raid 1+0
Could you please be specific on what configuration this is, in FreeNAS terminology?

1. Apologies for the screenshot not working. They should be working now.

2. See below code showing zpool status. There are two VDev's (2x3TB)(2x3TB) . The max usable storage is 4.6TB.

From what little you show, the ARC seems to be filling up, as would be expected.

Its causing 6 autocad users working from the server simultaneously to crash every few mins.
That's a lot of users for that server with such a tricky workload, so some performance degradation is expected.

However, the crashing part sounds like an autocad-exclusive problem.

Our previous server worked well running windows 7,
Amd phenom ii 955
16gb ddr3
Same virtual raid hdd config within windows

The funny thing we noticed was that as soon as we provided a static IPv4 to the old system and clients 192.168.1.xxx, the server would lock up, especially when saving but enabling auto on all settings, for both the server and client, everything ran smooth! We're only using FreeNAS for it snapshots, currently set at taking one every 10mins so we have .dwg backups to refer back to whilst working.

1. Anyways, what sort of timeframe does it take for the arc size to be mature? Our average file size is only 5mb and we have thousands of .dwg's + SLR quality images which all users need fast access to.

2. Any additional tips on speeding up the read/write apart from more ram? (in the process of acquiring 32gb from a friend)

3. With 32gb, the average ssd size for L2 ARC would be 32*5=160gb? So there is an option to use a 120gb ssd? Our oldest workstation has a 120gb Samsung drive which we could use.

Thanks
