Yet another question,
am i better to put the plugin jail and software stuff on a USB pen with mount points from raidz to the usb pen, or install it on the hdd raidz and get rid on the usb pen will it stop the HDD from spinning down as i have the power options set to do so!
P.S. the usb pen is a seperate one to the OS.

MiniDLNA is very easy to setup. The problem is arranging your source folders properly to support it if you don't want to get into additional parameters settings.

You can only use one mount point.

I recommend you start by moving all the files you want to share into a single folder, maybe called /mnt/raid1/media/ and move the folders /mnt/raid1/media/Video and /mnt/raid1/media/Music into it.

Now delete all your mount points and create one that points from /mnt/raid1/media/ to /mnt/plugin/jail/pijail/media.

Last thing, in the MiniDLNA plugin configuration, make sure Scan on Restart is checked.

Let me know how that works.

If you have any questions on MiniDLNA just ask me. Also the link below in my signature will fix the auto-scanning problem to which there is no other solution at this time and I don't expect to see one anytime soon for FreeNAS. Okay, I don't ever expect to see a solution other than what I created, period. I know there is a new version of MiniDLNA coming out and once I figure out how to compile it properly, I plan to push my fix into it. It would be strictly a FreeNAS/FreeBSD type thing.

As for the USB Flash drive for Plugins... You have read my opinion. I use a Flash drive and have had no problems. There are statistics out there that you can read. I'd say it was a stupid thing to do if it were writing large amounts of data all the time but it's only a small amount of data and not very often. To tell the truth, I only see that USB light flash when I reboot the computer, or MiniDLNA is triggered to scan the media again. I still recommend using a small SSD as they are under $50.00 and you can partition off 10GB for plugins, 8GB for a ZIL, and the rest for an L2ARC or split it for some other use. I plan to write a how-to guide on that in the near future.

OK thanks I will give it a try. Not been a good weekend, interners gone down two so relying on mobile data. Not good. Does it matter the shared or rather mount points are folder made by windows? I think one of them were?
Cheers

If you can navigate to the mount point using the browser, then it should be fine. You only have problems in FreeNAS with overlapping mount points, meaning any time a mount point specified the same location that is listed in another mount point.

Sounds like a bit of both. Had a quick look at the rescan issue. Am I right in thinking it only rescans at the mo when freenas is rebooted? If its still not scanning them its something else? Feel like a dick now for not realizing.

only 1 mount
/mnt/raid1 /mnt/plugin/jail/pijail/media

i can see the mounts updating correctly now when i change files about, but minidlna still does not seem to see the files, either at the media root or in folders off media. if i go to the minidlna ip : port it show 0 files still. thoughts?

Yes, MiniDLNA will not automatically rescan as you add, delete, or modify files in the shared areas, not in FreeBSD platforms which FreeNAS is built on. You need to have the rescan checked and if you use my posting to fix the rescanning issue, it will work but it does this by forcing MiniDLNA to stop and then restarts it, not a reboot of the FreeNAS server. Read the thread carefully before doing anything.

The other work around is to stop the MiniDLNA plugin and start it again manually. I like my method better of course.

Now I can't seem to turn minidlna off? Unless I turn the plugin off and on again. Any thoughts? Also the hdd wont spin down. They are set for 20minutes spindown
I've not got many files/folders to have a long file/folder name/string.

does this help. is it one of my HDD on the way out? causing the autoscan to think there is a change and initiating a scan? I know minidlna cant start as ive switch off the plugin. but something aint right?

According to this scan the "Plugins" is running, not stopped. Notice the jails have started.

As for MiniDLNA not stopping, did you implement the fix in post#45 of the thread? Although that problem is fixed in the source code, it will not be made public until the next release of the MiniDLNA plugin.

As for your drives not spinning down, that could be a lot of things causing that, not MiniDLNA. In fact MiniDLNA should have no bearing on it at all. Try this little trick, once your FreeNAS has been started and is running, unplug the Ethernet cable from it. If your drives are set to sleep after 20 minutes, check the drives in about 30 minutes to see if they are sleeping. Quite often it's network activity that keeps the drives running. If that works then you need to find the culprit on your network that is checking the drives often.

Cheers

It's hard to tell what is going on without knowing everything configured. For instance I don't use transmission which I would assume writes to the flash and possibly your drives very frequently. I don't use FireFly either. The only plugin I use is MiniDLNA. I think you will be doing a lot of trial and error to figure out what is going on. FreeNAS is not a turnkey program, there are things to figure out. It took me about 6 months, while learning to program this beast just to get a very small understanding of this software. I'm not a Linux or BSD person, I'm from the old days where punched cards and machine language ruled. Python and crap like that is over my head right now and I have no ambition to learn it. I learn what interests me, that is all. I want MiniDLNA to run properly as I use FreeNAS as a backup device and to stream movies. My daughter could use the streaming music if she wanted to but she doesn't, but it's there if she wants it.

After you set the spindown time for your drives did you "Shutdown" your computer? I say shutdown, not reboot. The values are not applied until the system is booted. In FreeNAS 9.x this should be fixed but for now it's needed. If your drives fail to spindown while the plugins are turned off and the LAN cable is disconnected, then you must have something setup which keeps looking at the drives. Although it's not fun to do, maybe a clean install is what you need. Grab a new USB flash drive, save your older one. Also save your config file, it may save you a little grief. Load up the new flash drive and leave it basically unconfigured. Auto-Import your pool, setup your spindown time, shutdown and boot up, unplug your lan CABLE, verify your drives spin down. I can give you the commands to force your drives to spin down if this doesn't work.

OK thanks. Transmission is off anyway at the moment still no internet at home, grrr, I did wonder at a fresh install. I did have the drives spinning down before configing minidlna? Maybe delete the plugin and see then start again? Cheers for your help.

i thought i was getting somewhere, ive reinstalled freenas, redone the plugin and minidlna, my drives are now spining down, but i cant seem to connect to the webpage. ip:8200 and all is standard setup. i can map to the plugin media folder and see all the media? any thoughts. before i could connect to the webpage and see a tally of the files minidlna had found. webpage cannot be found is the error. i can see the minidlna name as a UPnP device.
