Is it safe to update from this 8.0-release directly to beta4 ?

Yes, but you need to do the upgrade from CD. Backup your settings and any other files you might have changed like loader.conf. The CD will offer to save/transfer your settings during the upgrade, but this didn't work for me, the settings or the GUI was messed up I think. Next I tried a clean install and tried restoring my config settings from 8.0 which didn't end well either. There some database changes I think that just don't work for the upgrade. The final thing that worked for me was another clean install of beta 4 and re-entering all of my settings from the GUI again and importing my volume using the Auto-Import feature under Storage -> View All Volumes... (Its an Icon on the right panel near the top).

Since then I haven't had any major issues.
