Hey guys, first post first build here. Never had a NAS and figured it was about time to get one.

This NAS will mainly be used as a storage solution (~200 mb/s) but it should be able to handle some of the standard features and services like jails, FTP, rsync, cloud and low load web host. If it can handle HW-accelerated transcoding of 4k sources I would be very happy. HW-transcoding is not a requirement because I got a Skull Canyon, I would how ever like to re-purpose the NUC.

Feel free to give any and all suggestions. I am not dead set on this build and if you have any suggestions to make it better I would appreciate it but it is mainly compatibility issues that I am looking for.

I've roughly converted the prices into euros. They are not so much as to actually get the price but more so that you can make a rough comparison of the components that might require it.

MB:
Supermicro X11SSM-F: 228€

---- OR. (Help, no clue how to reason) ----
Supermicro X11SSL-CF: 325€
* Do I need the SAS controller? Is it not better to get the newer chipset
https://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?p=3408040

Memory:
2x Kingston DDR4 PC17000/2133MHz ECC CL15 8GB (D1G72M150): 2x128€ = 256€
*I really need help to figure out if this memory works, can't understand it from manufactures website: https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C236_C232/X11SSM-F.cfm
* I changed memory from my old due the post by @Linkman
https://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?p=3609338

2x Hynix DDR4 PC19200/2400MHz ECC Reg CL17 8GB: 2x104€ = 208€
https://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?p=4546470
---- OR A STUPID IDEA? ----
2x DDR3 PC3L-8500R 16GB ECC Reg: 2x80€ = 160€
* These have no more info on them from the store, but I assume they are generic? Will they work? They are not new but a lot of ram.

CPU:
Intel Pentium G4620 3,7GHz Socket 1151: 102€
* Might be able to do HW-accelerated transcodes, if not, NUC can handle software.
https://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?p=4094809

PSU:
Seasonic Platinum-520 Fanless 520W: 173€
* Ballpark calc: 6x30w (drives) + 50-80w (CPU) + ?50w? (other componets?) + 20% margin = 384w
* This is something I would like a bit of info on, I think this one is a little bit to expensive but maybe it is worth it?
https://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?p=1478083

HD:
6x WD Red WD60EFRX 64MB 6TB: 199€
https://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?p=2739254

Cache:
Random SSD, will figure this one out.

Thanks in advance
Stefan

PS:
I will include the amazon links if it helps FreeNAS when I get home, currently at work. The places I'm linking to is a Swedish price finder provider, I do not think it will hurt FreeNAS in any way.

Edit reasons:
1: Changed ram from incompatible ram.

One off the bat, you have linked both DDR4 and DDR3 RAM there, those motherboards are DDR4 so the DDR3 isn't an option.

And is that DDR4 Registered? I am pretty sure you need UDIMMs, Unbuffered not Registered, better check the motherboard specs on that.

Thanks @Linkman, changed ram now to unregistered but not sure if there is something else that I need to consider.

Any idea on how to reason with the motherboard and CPU?

Best regards

The motherboard spec link says "Unbuffered ECC UDIMM DDR4 2400MHz"

The Kingston website says that that RAM (D1G72M150) is "8GB DDR4 2133MHz ECC Unbuffered RAM Memory DIMM"

So RAM is compatible.

I believe your CPU is compatible with those motherboards, but I can't speak to whether it meets your performance requirements or not.

Um... except that the RAM is slower than what the motherboard wants.

Thanks yet again @Linkman, much appreciated. I think I will go with that CPU as it is utterly cheap and I would very much like to know if FreeNAS can HW-accelerate the transcoding (Plex on ubuntu can). The CPU is so cheap that I could pretty much upgrade to a Xeon when ever I need to.

@wblock, I checked the manufactures website, pressed "Tested Memory List" and that is where I saw 1.2V 2133MHz. I can without a problem switch ram but this was the supported ram (I thought, might not be) with the lowest CAS. The way I understood it CAS matters more than MHz. Should I switch to higher CAS but 2400MHz to be on the safe side? The ram that I choose also had the benefit of having a decent price.

Any input on the MB? The way I understand it the choice is between X11SSL-CF (LSI/Avago SAS2308 SAS2 + C232 chipset) vs X11SSM-F (No SAS2308 + C236 chipset). Sadly I do not know to much about hardware so I don't really understand if the SAS2308 will help me with my SATA drives.

Thanks
/Stefan

If you look carefully at the product page of your chosen Supermicro Mainboard, you will recognize that you can switch to 2133 MHz AND to 2400 MHz at the QVL list.

If you should take 2133 MHz or 2400 MHz memory depends on the CPU you chose. The Intel Pentium G4620 wants 2400 MHz ... so I would take this.
