I am pretty sure that chassis has an expander built into the backplane.
Doubt it (OP didn't specify which exact chassis, so we can't know for sure)--if it did, OP wouldn't need a second HBA. But still there'd be no need for an expander. The motherboard has a built-in HBA, and OP's plugged in another one. Cabling would depend on whether the chassis includes a -A or a -TQ backplane--if the latter, it would simply be four SAS cables; if the former, four SAS breakout cables.

I have the BPN-SAS-836TQ backplane which is the 16-port SAS SATA Backplane. I am using breakout cables to connect to the onboard and PCIe HBA.

if I have a X10SRH-CLN4F-O, mobo, how do I connect 12 drives to it? i know it has 10 sata ports and 8 SAS ports (via broadcom controller). what kind of cabling would I need to connect the 8 SATA drives to the SAS connectors?
