Will it FreeNAS Scale?

Hi All,

I’ve finally got round to doing a system refresh and wanted some feedback on how best to go about this. I’ve begged, borrowed and stole (/sarc) the following random assortment of devices which I now have at my disposal with which to create my new wonderful hyper-converged-home-master-node-infrastructure thingy.

The devices:

1x HPE ML30 Gen10 Intel Xeon E2224

2x 32GB DDR4 UDIMM ECC Micron

1x 16GB DDR4 UDIMM ECC HPE

1x Intel DC S4500 1.9TB SSD SATA

1x Samsung 830 256GB SSD SATA

1x Intel Optane M.10 16GB NVMe

1x Intel Optane 800p 118GB NVMe

2x Intel DC P4600 1.6TB NVMe

4x WD GOLD 10TB SATA (from old system pair of mirrors)

LSI 9400-8i x8

Supermicro AOC-SLG3-2M NVME card x8

MLN-CX512F HPE Ethernet 10/25Gb 2-port 641SFP28 Network Adapter (Mellanox ConnectX5 I think) x16

Data is split roughly as following:

The requirements:

Achieve storage for two types of project data:
  • Genomic data, come in the form of fasta files which are 2GB+ text files and lots of them. 500GB per project
  • Sensor data, projects typically run to about 200GB and have a lot of small files which take forever to copy back and forth between workstation and storage.
Some VM’s
  • NodeRed
  • Grafana
  • Influx
  • MQTT
  • Postgresql - GeoDatabases
  • Something I haven’t thought of yet.
Backup for Apple devices using TimeMachine

2.5 users, small home network. 60 odd sensors from heating, lights, smart home things.

The workstation will be connected directly via a 25GB DAC/AOC whilst the rest of the network will be serviced via a 10GbE on the second port.

The PCIe slots on the motherboard are as follows:

M.2 2x

16x (16x)

8x (4x)

16x (4x)

8x (4x)

===========================================================================================================

My question is how best to deploy the collection of bric-a-brac in the best possible way. TrueNAS Scale appeals as its likely that I can get the NIC to work and the VM side of things would be easier. I’m unsure if Fusion Pools will be possible?

With that said my current line of thinking is something along the lines off:

2x P4600 special vdev for metadata (play with the small file size)

4x WD GOLD 2x 2 Mirror

800p as the boot drive.

M.2 (2x) - Optane 800p

16x (16x) - Supermicro AOC-SLG3-2M NVME card

8x (4x) - LSI 9400-8i x8

16x (4x) - MLN-CX512F HPE Ethernet 10/25Gb

8x (4x) -

However that leaves plenty of other drives and maybe not the optimal solution.

Would there be any advantage to using the 800p as a SLOG for the VM’s? (TNS installed on a SATA SSD) (I noticed that Patrick M. Hausen uses a single Optane as a SLOG on his home nas).

Any thoughts and feedback gratefully received!
