I'm seeing constant I/O write activity on all my disks. Currently my pool is completely empty and I believe it's idle, no scrub or SMART test has been scheduled, but i'm seeing this:

Is this normal? Is it because of the compression? (it's at the default setting lz4)

What is all that "smbd" junk on the bottom there?

No idea, I think it's related to samba/CIFS. So far it seems to be operating correctly however.

Alright, it was a user error...apparently I didn't seat the RAM properly. Those suckers need to be muscled in.

I was able to POST. I updated the BIOS firmware and successfully flashed the LSI 2308 to IT mode.

Question...I'm also planning on utilizing the board's Intel C224 chip for it's mini SAS to SATA conversion, as i'm using 10 drives total (8 from the LSI, 2 from the Intel.) Do I need to flash the C224 to IT mode as well?

If so...anyone know where I can find the files to flash it? I couldn't find anything from Google.

i had the same issue.

anyway, if you could tell me how to flash the SAS controller i would be most grateful. i cannot see in the bios any drives connected to it.

search the forum, there are plenty of articles. i followed this guide http://www.servethehome.com/ibm-serveraid-m1015-part-4/ , if this page doesnt load then search for the firmware. go here http://www.lsi.com/support/pages/download-search.aspx and search for component storage type, product family host bus adaptor , product "LSI SAS 9211-8i" asset type is firmware. click search, then expand the drop down and select acheived, you want the P16 firmware named 9211_8i_Package_P16_IR_IT_Firmware_BIOS_for_MSDOS_Windows

You're also not going to see any of the harddrives attached to the M1015 in the motherboards BIOS

Or go here https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...ut-that-lsi-card-join-the-crowd.11901/page-10 post #198.

"For anyone looking for P16 of the firmware...you can find it here:
http://www.lsi.com/Pages/user/eula.aspx?file=http://www.lsi.com/downloads/Public/Host%20Bus%20Adapters/Host%20Bus%20Adapters%20Common%20Files/SAS_SATA_6G_P16/9211_8i_Package_P16_IR_IT_Firmware_BIOS_for_MSDOS_Windows.zip&Source=http://www.lsi.com/support/pages/download-results.aspx?keyword=9211-8i

All I had to do was copy the 2118it.bin (Firmware folder), mptsas2.rom (sasbios_rel folder), and just to be safe sas2flsh.exe (sas2flash_dos_rel folder) files from the downloaded ZIP into my sas2008 usb boot disk and re-run the commands

sas2flsh -o -f 2188it.bin -b mptsas2.rom
and
sas2flsh -0 sasadd 500605bxxxxxxxxx

Hope this helps others looking.

I recently got the asrock E3C224D4I-14S, ans I'm wondering if anyone has issues with one of the LSI SAS ports?

No. Make sure you are actually plugged into the LSI ports and not the Intel. I had some confusion when I was first getting everything set up. One of the vertical ports is Intel SATA. One vertical and the horizontal port are the LSI. Not sure why they set it up like that. I assumed the horizontal port was the Intel initially, until I RTFM. If you look in the manual 2 SFF-8087 are labeled SAS. The other is SATA.
