I'm new to the whole NAS scene so if you could keep explanations simplish.
Ok so I have gotten to the point to where I need to set up my email to receive system alerts. After trying different configurations I still cant get my test email to go through at all. I even went so far as to make and use a Yahoo mail account still no success.

  1. In [Network] - [Global Configuration]
    • Have you configured an "IPv4 Default Gateway"?
    • Have you configured a "Nameserver 1" (which is DNS Resolution)
  2. Can your FreeNas Server connect to the Internet?
    • From Shell, type: ping www.yahoo.com and see if you get a reply OR in the GUI have it check for updates
  3. In [Account] - [Users]; Edit the "root" users account and configure their e-mail address
    • This is where you want the e-mails to be sent to
  4. Try it again
  5. If needed, check these threads:
  6. For Yahoo; check this link for settings

@Mirfster, I don't think that's it. I think the problem is likely that his Gmail account is set up to require two-factor authentication. I know there are threads around here discussing how to configure FreeNAS to work with that, but I don't see them on a quick look.

I finally figured it out... somehow. Anyways thank you for your help. The gmail account isn't configured for two-factor, I saw that thread as I browsed the forum and that wasn't what I was dealing with. Turns out google was blocking FreeNAS from logging into my account. The dedicated yahoo email address I created worked after I selected TLS in the TLS/SSL drop down.

Interesting. Perhaps those that are using gmail will have to set theirs up as two-factor or get the same issues. Not sure though since I don't use gmail. Thanks for the follow-up.
