11.2 Clicking "Send Email" from System>Email hangs with message "Starting job"

I'm trying to set up email alerts but the email feature is giving me trouble. It hangs with the message "Starting Job..." and doesn't ever do anything until I refresh the page. No mail is ever sent.

I'm using sendgrid's SMTP relay

I have the root user's email address set up as my personal gmail account. I can ping the outside world from shell. Any ideas what else I need to do? Thanks

I got this figured out minutes after posting. I think port 25 is being blocked by my ISP or something.. enabling TLS and port 587 resolved it.

It should still timeout though, the message seemed to stay there forever.
