Hi,

I just put together a NAS box two days ago. I used all latest software from FreeNAS.

Here is my configuration:

Global Configuration
IPv4 Default Gateway 192.168.1.1 (my router)
Nameserver 1 8.8.8.8
Nameserver 2 209.18.47.61 (roadrunner)
Nameserver 3 209.18.47.62 (roadrunner)

System Settings Email
From email myname@gmail.com
outgoing mail server smtp.gmail.com
Port to connect to 465 (I tried 587, it did not make any difference)
Use SMTP Authentication Checked
username myname@gmail.com
password my gmail password

Whew I click Send button I get:
Your test email could not be sent: [Errno 8] hostname nor servname provided, or not known

I can "ping 8.8.8.8" or "ping google.com" from the shell.

Any ideas what is wrong with my setup are very much appreciated.

One more thing, I am not familiar with Linix so I can not do the shell thing. All I want is to succesfully send test email and stick to GUI.
If there is a thread that gives clear reason why it does not work and way arround it, please let me know.

I fixed it !!!!!!

I replaced "smtp.gmail.com" with IP address "74.125.133.108" and it WORKED! I have sent and received a test email.
Now, why when I ping "smtp.gmail.com" from shell it works, e.g. the name gets resolved, but the name does not work in
smtp setup? Is this a bug ? Can a FreeNAS guru explain this?

Thnak you for quick reply.

I did read that thread, my settings are exactly the same and I still coud not send test email.
I tried both port numbers it did not make difference. The question is why ping within the shell
resolves url correctly and emil setup does not? Do I really have DNS problem or there is a bug in FreeNAS?
I attched a screen capture of the ping.

If you change back to smtp.gmail.com does the email stop working?

I was willing to bet money that changing it to the IP didn't fix it. ;)
