I set my FreeNAS machine up originally with drives connected to the motherboard SATA ports, but I've just added an M1015 (flashed to IT mode) and have connected four additional drives to it. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to the drives' ad<x> assignments: There is one particular drive I would like to be ada0 and to be a spare for the existing pool, then have ada1, ada2, and ada3 as part of a new pool, but whichever connector I use, it's always da1.

How to ensure that a particular drive gets a specific ad<x> assignment?

FreeBSD allows you to build a kernel that maps various controller/bus combinations to wired-down devices. However, I don't know if there's an easy way to do this in FreeNAS. The current thinking is to avoid that sort of device naming due to the ambiguities resulting from swaps/moves/etc. and to use facilities such as gptid to identify devices in a slot-agnostic manner.

You add it to Tunables and you get to do it one at a time.
