SOLVED Do E5-16xx v3/v4 support LRDIMM?

Hi,

I think I have a bad day, because I can't manage to find a simple thing on the internet. My google-foo is just failing. Searching the motherboard manual didn't help either :(

Do E5-16xx Haswell/Broadwell CPUs support LRDIMM or only RDIMMs (and UDIMMs) DDR4?

If it depends on the motherboard then here it is: X10SRM-F/-TF... The motherboard's tested memory list only includes RDIMM memory but I've seen the Crucial company has LRDIMM modules tested with X10SRM...

No, E5-16xx CPU's do not support LRDIMM.

The X10SRM-F should work fine with LRDIMM ... if you populate it with an E5-26xx CPU.

I just did a quick search of the datasheets and couldn't come up with anything. I thought it'd be easy to find. Don't feel bad. :smile:

Yeah, but that information comes from somewhere, usually with a lot more specificity.
Moreover supermicro didn't place this note for X10SRM :P

It seems to me a bit like tacit knowledge. I had had some thoughts the LRDIMMs wouldn't work with 16xx but I couldn't recall where I had learned that...

Intel deprecated LRDIMM support in E5-1600 v1 and completely removed it in V2. They no longer reference it at all after V2.

Yeah, the skeezy market segmentation practices at Intel.

Generally speaking, Intel wanted CPU's in the E5-16* (regardless of generation) to be workstation class CPU's, sold at a lower price point. They realized that there would be some of us who would see this as a way to build less expensive servers. In Intel's mind, a server should be a big thing with massive CPU cores and lots of memory, but there are use cases like FreeNAS where a much more limited CPU plus gobs of memory will be very sufficient. So they actually found a way to bake into the CPU silicon a way to make sure that a workstation CPU couldn't be crammed to the gills with high density memoty.
