Freenas 9.10-U6. In the advanced dataset options are two fields - "Quota for this dataset and all children" and "Quota for this dataset"? What's the difference?

If you quota a dataset (call it Junk, with a quota 500GiB) and then create a dataset under it (lets call that Trash), wouldn't the max space Trash could use be 500GiB minus whatever else Junk is using? Or does Trash get a separate quota (not set here, so unlimited)?

OK, so if I understand the doc correctly:

  • "Quota for this dataset and all children" is called refquota
  • "Quota for this dataset" is just called quota
  • quota includes children datasets, clones and snapshots.
  • refquota includes children datasets, but NOT clones and snapshots.
  • Pretty much the same thing applies to reservations.
Do I have it?

No, you're backwards. From the docs:

The quota and reservation properties are convenient for managing disk space consumed by datasets and their descendents.
quota is for this dataset and its descendents.

The refquota and refreservation properties are appropriate for managing disk space consumed by datasets
refquota is for this dataset only.
