Hi,

Apologies if this is a simple question but I need some help in identify if there is a problem with my pool and whether is requires a HDD replacement.

My pool is currently in a DEGRADED state, I have 4 (6TB) disks in my pool with 2 disk redundancy. When looking at the status one of the disks (da5p2) is in a DEGRADED state (Checksum 280?).

I've ran this command: smartctl -q noserial -a /dev/da5
Results below:

Checksum issues are sometimes caused by issues with cabling, the controller, or the PSU. You aren't running long SMART tests on that drive (which you should schedule a couple times a month), so I'd start with that:
smartctl -t long /dev/da5

Why are you running short tests every 12 hours? That seems a bit excessive--and it also means that if you are running long tests, they'll scroll off the list in 10 days. Agree with the recommendation to run a long test, and check your cable connections.

Thanks. Running long test now. How will I see the results of this?

I don't know why it's running short tests every 12 hours. I believe I left everything as default.
What should it be set to and how can I change it?

Edit: Just seen the smart tests tasks screen and indeed it's set to run every 12 hours!

Once it finishes, run the same smartctl command you used for your first post.

Thanks for your help! Much appreciated.

I will add the output from the long test once it's finished. I have a new drive on standby if required.

Please find below the results of the long SMART test. It seems to me that there are no errors on the disk. Does this mean the problem lies elsewhere?

A SMART test isn't the end-all of all testing. A failed SMART test pretty much always means the drive is toast... but you can have a bad drive that won't fail a SMART test.

Checksum errors often crop up due to cabling/PSU/etc. issues. I'd go through all of that carefully. But I'd be prepared to swap the drive.

Thanks for the suggestions.

PSU - should affect other drives and not one specific drive? Only this drive has been producing these errors (started around a month ago).
Cabling - using a sas cable so it could be this - I will check.
Memory - I also read that memory could be an issue but again why only this drive?

PSU - maybe. If one rail is sagging a bit in voltage, that one drive may be a touch more sensitive than others. All depends on component tolerances.
Cabling - Most likely - power or SAS cable
Memory - Not likely if it's tied to one drive. You could always run a memtest, if you can take the system offline for that long.
