Im planning to add an SSD to my Freenas server dedicated to holding the Jails, but am out of SATA ports on my mobo. I just read the hardware recommendations and see the sole recommended SATA controller is the IBM ServeRAID M1015 which is way overkill for my needs (only need 1 extra port), and out of my budget.

Are there any alternatives that will work? Not much was mentioned about why the other controllers are problematic.. just an ominous warning about losing data. I plan to use this port only for the single SSD with my Jails, which will be backed up to RaidZ.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Marvell SE9172 based 2port controllers might be worth a shot. That's the 2port Marvell on the ASRock C2750D4I which was deemed okay-ish by some. M1015 and other LSI-based controllers are still the best bet.

I don't know if NVMe SSDs are fully supported by now, but if, they're the best bet.

I maybe just unlucky but be careful I plugged a 2 port marvel controller from some where or other via Amazon and it died after 2 months so try and find a good name.

It wasn't a driver issue it just died, which was nice, till then was running (playing) 2 ssd on it one as SLOG and one as Cache and it did work.
