Can't access server from browser

I have an old Dell computer I am experimenting with that has run all versions of Fedora, has only 3 gigs of RAM, and runs FreeNAS 8 or 9 depending on the flash drive plugged in,, at the moment 8.3.2 but the problem is the same with either version.

I put two hard drives in and initially installed FreeNAS 9 on it. That went smoothly and I could access it with Firefox from Fedora20 64 bit, and XFCE. However after shutting down and rebooting the browser no longer connects?

I can ping the server but can not ssh to it. The server will ssh inot this Fedora 20 computer. It doesn't appear to be a firewall or SELinux problem.The server always appears to recognize my DD-WRT router as 102.168.1.1 and gets assigned the address 192.168.1.6.

If I reinstall FreeNAS9 to the hard drive I can connect with the browser. But can't get back in after rebooting!

However that same trick does not work with either of the flash sticks, all I get is a set-up screen, no address is suggested as it is when using the hard drive.

If I could ssh in to the server I would copy the ifconfig screen to this message but can't. It looks to be right though for em0.

Although I doubt the issue is RAM related, know that you are not using the recommended minimum which is 8GB for FreeNAS 9.x.

I don't want to assume anything but when you state you reboot, what are you rebooting? I would assume the FreeNAS machine but heck, you could be talking about the computer your browser is on, you are not specific.

When looking at the Console screen it should tell you the IP address assigned. If it doesn't then you may have a DHCP issue. You can reset the configuration from the console screen vice re-installing FreeNAS. And once you initially installed FreeNAS, did you configure your network setup per the user manual?

Since the RAM is low I thought I'd try FreeNAS 8. I see no difference but I'm not getting far enough into it to know.

When I say reboot I am talking about the FreeNAS server. The client computers are working normally. I installed FreeNAS, it appeared to work so I removed the keyboard and display and shoved it in the corner. Next morning I rebooted the server but found I could not access it via the LAN with a browser like I could after the initial install, but I had not tried rebooting at that time.

If I understood the set-up process I should be able to do that from the browser; can't do that until I get a reliable connection.

During the boot process I can see that it gets assigned 192.168.1.6, at least I can see that pass on the text display as the system starts.

I suspect the fact that I can not ssh into the server is indicative of a problem but I am not certain that's a requirement for FreeNAS? If it is I will have to find out how to enable sshd, in Linux I would use chkconfig or a systemctl command to check status and enable.

If FreeNAS will work and be accessible from the OS-X computers on my LAN I will use different hardware. I have two NFS boxes but I haven't had much success mating them with the Apple stuff.

Can you ping the .6 address after it's restarted. If not, check your DHCP server and see what address it got. For a server, you really need to set a static IP address for it.

SSH is not a requirement, though it's nice to have it configured and available.

Yes, that always works, just no ssh to the server but I can ssh the other way, from the FreeNAS server to the Fedora computers.

Did you enable ssh on Freenas server before moving it? It is not enabled by default

Is that Dell computer using a Realtek network card? They are well known to not behave in rational ways, which is why we adamantly recommend Intel NICs.

Hi,
told you I'm coming back. After a complete setup server was running fine. Used the wizard to set up users, groups und permissions. Having done this there where no entries in users und groups. Set them up again without wizard. I was able to open the share in the finder and icon appeared on desktop.
After rebooting the system I couldn't get access to the server anymore. No matter what I tried. Can find the server with browser on the router and pinged it successfully. But still no access thru Safari. Set up the server from the scratch. NO ACCESS
Any solution out there, please.
