Cannot edit user because of Microsoft Account setting

in my root user I managed to enable the Microsoft account setting without ever attaching an email. Since that was saved, I am unable to change the root user account settings because "The Microsoft Account feature requires an email address.". To satisfy this I have tried disabling the service and also adding an email address in the relevant field. In both cases the same message is displayed. I'm assuming I should not have been able to enable without an email in the first place, but what can I do to fix this?
