Hi all.

I'm getting this from syslog in observium:

I get it for all drives. This is just an example. No strange behavior. Everything normal. No warnings in GUI.
It's an X10SL7-f with 32 GB ECC and E3 1231. Using FreeNAS-9.10-STABLE-201606270534 (dd17351). The warning was showing on past versions.

What is this?

Did you try to decode the data?
scsi_status=2 means Check Condition

scsi_sense 72 01 00 1d means descriptor format, current sense, and No Sense. I'm still not certain what that means.

I suspect you are having some timeouts in communications and you are seeing this minimal impact but it shouldn't be happening. Does this happen only when you power up the system or does it happen at random intervals?

I'd be curious what/how you have this all setup on your system from a hardware/firmware perspective. You need to list more about your hardware, if you're using the onboard SAS, have it flashed to IT mode, or are you just using the normal SATA connections, and lastly how many drives you have and if you are mixing drives between the two controllers, are drives on both controllers displaying the messages? If you only are using the LSI ports then I'd move the drives to the SATA ports and see if it goes away. Maybe you are not flashed to the proper IT firmware?

Also, did this problem only just start when you upgraded to 9.10 or has it been around for a while?

So I'm asking for a lot of details because it will help try to isolate and diagnose the issue.

@Ericloewe Just plain simple x10sl7-f attached with sata cables

@joeschmuck Can't correlate with anything. At least at first sight. I still see alot of those. I think they started to show after an update but can't be 100% sure. I'm using LSI and SATA ports and the error shows on both.

On board LSI is flashed as IT and version xxxx. No boot rom.
This errors DO NOT show in bottom log windows in GUI. I can see them because I output syslog to an observium server.

No errors in System Event Log.
ZFS Replication of datasets to offsite server.
Smart and scrub tests enabled and without errors.
Server always on. No spin down.

So you are having this issue on 8 drives only, not all 10 drives. You did not list the serial numbers of the drives for each connection but I'll bet the serial numbers for drives for ada0 and ada1 are not listed in your error message. The reason I asked the questions above was I wanted to find out if it was related only to the LSI controller and it appears so to me, I just don't try to jump into it because I like to have all the information. Many of the other folks here have more knowledge on the LSI controller but I'm just dipping my toes into it now. Now I'd recommend you reflash your LSI controller to the proper IT firmware to match the FreeNAS version you are running. If you only upgraded to FreeNAS 9.10 without upgrading the LSI controller, you can pretty much bet this is your problem.

Please post your results once you have done this.

You are right. Only drives connected to the LSI are showing in the error. How come I didn't noticed that... damn.

I'm using this firmware since I'm using the server. I've flashed after I bought the board and did all burning,etc with it. Then put it in production. Should I upgrade it?

Sorry but I've done all I can since this is not my area of expertise but I do think it has something to do with the IT firmware and it likely needs to be updated to the latest revision.

While I'm pretty sure this is an LSI controller issue, likely the firmware, I am really curious if anyone else has this same motherboard and if they are having issues as well but ignoring them. I would feel a little better if you didn't say that it has been around on previous version of FreeNAS. What versions?
