Hi,

I'm planning a new storage system and want to setup a FreeNAS storage with new hardware and a second system for replication.

We work in CGI/Video editing, 3-4 machines, big files (video), or many files (image sequences, TGA/PNG-files) and orga with 4 machines working with office documents. No dedup, no compressing.

Maybe you can have a look at the hardware I selected and the existing hardware I want to use:

Main Storage:
- SUPERMICRO X10SL7-F
- Intel Core i3-4370 3800 1150 Box
- 2x Crucial DIMM 8 GB ECC DDR3-1600, CT102472BD160B
- 6x 4TB HDD (mixed vendors), 1 vdev, RAIDZ2
- Fractal Design Define R4 - Tower - ATX
- Seasonic G-450 Power supply, 80+gold

Existing Hardware to use as replication target:
- Supermicro X7DB8 Mainbaord, 16GB DB-ECC
- Intel Xeon E5405, 4 Core, 2GHz
using 6x 4TB HDD (mixed vendors), 1 vdev, RAIDZ2

What do you think? Good choice, old hardware strong enough to work as replication target?

Thanks for your opinion.

Sounds good. Performance may suffer on the old system, but you'll have to check for yourself.

Hi Eric,

thank you for your answer. The Xeon may be suffering the system, right?

Can you recommend a switch? Mixed with 1gbe/10gbe Ports with 4-5 10gbe ports required.

S.

The best you can do in the affordable segment would be the DLink DGS-1510-28X w/ 4x SFP+ and 24x 1000Base-T ports. The Netgears w/ 8-12 10Gbe ports have security issues.

I don't have personal experience, but the D-Links are very interesting switches at somewhat reasonable prices.

I have recently been doing alot of video editing platforms. I really prefer a ssd pool. Especially if you want to drive 4-5 10gbe. 1 raidz won't be able to drive that kind of workload. I would up the ram also.
