Hi,

Not sure where to post this so would be great if someone could re-route it!

I'm aiming to build a budget NAS under £450~ that I can upgrade in the future but is 'small' enough that I can tuck away somewhere.

Do these parts look good?

Just a Yea or Nay will do!

You should use NAS drives, rather than Green/Barracuda/Desktop drives.

Seagate NAS-HD/IronWolf, WD Red, etc.

The desktop drives aren't rated for 24/7 use, but more importantly, they don't have Time Limited Error Recovery, which means when you have a failing drive, it can cause your whole NAS to perform super terribly, and it could possibly take WEEKS to rebuild the drives, rather than days.

Of course, when using a desktop drive in a NAS, everything is fine until its not.

from here it's possible to see that Gigabyte mobo should support ECC ram and have and intel LAN chipset, but is not specified which one...

The parts look adequate. In the US, especially on the budget end, it's often cheaper to go pre-built than to roll your own. The Dell T20, the Lenovo TS140, and ProLiant ML10 are all options of servers that can be bought new under US$300 (and in the case of the ML10, under US$200), and would seem to be a good fit for a budget FreeNAS box.
