Yes, this has happened many times to me. Thumb drives are just not durable enough for ZFS, regardless if they're new or not. The current recommendation is a small M.2 SSD with a M.2 to USB3 adapter. The M.2 SSDs are much more robust and much faster than thumb drives.

Thank you for the response,
I guess its time for an upgrade :)
its good that they have a USB adapter, i will definitely go that route,
any recommendations from preferred brands ? probably go for a 256 gig at most.

Any M.2 SSD from a reputable vendor (Micron, Kingston, Samsung) will work. Try to find something small, 64 GB or less, as the boot pool will only use < 16 GB of that.

Transcend had/has smaller drives (some even MLC in the past). Whether they are cheaper is a different story.

I had to replace two USB sticks in 1 year and I told myself I'd had enough. Got a cheap $20 SSD and it's been running strong for like 7 years, I think we can safely say that's way cheaper than your $12 for 4 years.

I'd imagine you just have been pretty lucky with 1 every 4 years. After all, even with me having owned my NAS for 11 years, that's still only 3 sample points for your 4-year cycle... Hardly enough to make any accurate statistical conclusions.
