Yeah, but pfSense does routing and tons of networking stuff that can be accelerated. Not really FreeNAS' case.

sorry but this is probably a really stupid question but how much better is the 2750 over the 2550? as a follow up, for a simple home freenas where I would probably be transcoding no more than 2 or 3 streams, would an atom be sufficient compared to an i3?

The 2550 is said to be a bit tight for Plex, since it only has four cores. It's hard to tell, as it's not a very popular model.

"Transcoding" is grievously vague, because transcoding a low bit rate source like a 480p mp4 to a low bit rate target like a phone is massively different than transcoding a mkv to a 720P TV.

The 2550 is probably fine for FreeNAS-without-jails, but the 2750 is a better choice for jails. A better CPU is preferable if your needs go beyond light duty transcoding.
