Anyone have better luck than me on the WD40EFZX Red Plus?

Amazon shipped me one to replace a failing WD40EFRX in my pool, but this promptly generated multiple read errors on the first scrub. When Amazon RMA replaced it with another WD40EFZX, the same thing happened: multiple read errors on the first scrub.

No issues scrubbing a WD60EFZX.

Amazon may be the problem here. I have had multiple attempts to buy a non-retail (i.e. the packaging depends on Amazon) version from there. In all cases the packaging was so abysmal that I didn't even bother to unpack and test, but returned the drive immediately. Now, I assume that you would have noticed that. But that problem is likely not confined to the packaging. I would indeed assume that all of the handling is executed as if it was dog food.

@Samuel Tai Did those drives pass burnin?

I have 2 Amazon-sourced 40EFZX's as my current cold spares that were shipped to me recently in what I recognized as traditional WD OEM single drive packaging (so I was happy, unlike some other posters here who shared pics of really poor shipping practice of HDD's on Amazon purchases). I ran smartctl short, long, badblocks, samartctl long on both, no reported issues.

It looks as if I now have to put one of these two in service as an EFRX replacement, so I'm interested to know about the packaging and testing history of the drives you are telling us about...

These came in the standard single-drive WD OEM packaging. I didn't have any problems during the initial commissioning, and both drives made it through the resilver without issues. The first drive started flagging incomplete SMART tests during my scheduled SMART tests, but completed manual SMART tests without issues. The second passed all SMART tests. Only during my weekly scrub did both throw read errors.

Thanks for the info, Samuel. Same situation so far, it seems. Now I am apprehensive. I'll report in ...

OK, it turns out the WD40EFZX was actually OK. I've got a faulty slot on my backplane.

Just to share I recently bought a brand new WD40EFZ in OEM packaging (from decent supplier) -- first one was so broken that grinding noises could be heard from it! Needless to say failed SMART tests. Second one was fine.
