Hello Everyone,
It's been a few years since I played with FreeNAS and I am now getting back in to it. Few years older, few years smarter, and a lot more reading this time around.
So let me cut to the chase... I am building a bare metal FreeNAS box as from what I've read many of the senior forum members here say putting FreeNAS in a VM is pretty much asking for problems and difficulties. I intend to use this box as a SAN for an ESXi lab environment via NFS or iSCSI (I havn't done enough research into that side yet of which protocol is better as last I checked NFS was better but that was a few years back)
The specifications of the build are as follows:
Of course the case, fans, etc.. are all included but I don't feel those require as much detail.
If your still reading at this point thank-you very much, and I appreciate any and all input. If I missed something stupid by all means call me out on it! I'd much rather hear it now than after spending more money. Thanks for the validation / corrections in advance.

The specifications of the build are as follows:
- Motherboard - SuperMicro MBD-X9SCL-F-O LGA 1155 Intel C202
- Upgraded to 32GB ECC RAM. Max the MoBo allows
- CPU - Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2 Ivy Bridge
- RAM - 16GB ECC Crucial brand
- 2x PERC H310 crossflashed to IT mode
- 10G Card - Chelsio NetApp Dual Port SFP+ 10GBE PCIe 111-00603-A0
- I plan on using a DAC cable for the connection between the FreeNAS box and my ESXi host
- Hard Drives (Setup in ZFS RAID10 equivalent):
- 3x - TOSHIBA DT01ACA200 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3 (Already own)
- 6 - 10x - WD Blue 500GB drives
- I plan on upgrading to WD Red's in the future unless someone else has a better recommendation, however I don't quite have the coin right this second for a bunch of new HD's
- SLOG - (I believe I will need this based on ESXi using ASync) - Intel S3700 100GB version, that I will likely setup as a 20GB SLOG volume, as it will then be under provisioned and last longer? Correct?
- Power Supply - Rosewill CAPSTONE Series CAPSTONE-550 Continuous 550W (This will likely be replaced first with a 850W+ seasonic PSU)
Of course the case, fans, etc.. are all included but I don't feel those require as much detail.
