Hello,

Trying to do Time Machine or copying anything through AFP shares is next to impossible with Freenas. There are so many disconnects weather the connection is through WIFI or LAN. CIFS shares work wonderfully with Macs. AFP don't at all. I pasted some of my errors I get on AFP shares and my Macs trying to connect to my Freenas.

All my folders that share through AFP are ONLY shared under AFP. They aren't shared as CIFS so there should be any conflict. CIFS folders are only shared as CIFS and AFP folders are only shared as AFP shares and so on.

I get this error on my Mac when trying to backup to my Freenas:

The backup disk image “/Volumes/TimeMachine/Luis' MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” could not be created (error (null)).

This comes up on my Freenas:

Let me know what other information you guys need. By the way I am trying to do this though LAN connection because its even worse through WIFI. CIFS shares don't have any problems weather WIFI or LAN transfers.

Thank you.

Which version specifically. Telling us your on latest doesn't mean you actually are.

Hello, can someone help? What other information do you guys need? I want to make AFP shares and TimeMachine work with my system. At this time it isn't working right and it is SUPER slow. I would like to help to get AFP working as good as CIFS does with my MAC systems.

Thanks.

Why don't you just use cifs?

Because you need AFP to run TimeMachine and iPhoto library. Since it was advertised as being TimeMachine compatible I expected to work. That is the reason I went with Freenas, an OS that can support both Windows and Macs. I want AFP to work as well as CIFS so I can back up my Macs which is the most important part for me. I'm sure for most Mac users the feature of supporting TimeMachine is very important.

Have you tried doing am iperf test to see what your network speeds are between your Mac and FreeNAS. Also what is your FreeNAS hardware?

No, I haven't ran iperf. I'll run it tonight.

My Freenas hardware is:

Asus Z87i Deluxe
16GB of ram
Intel i3-4330 CPU @ 3.50GHz
WD Red Pro four 4tb drives
Crucial M4 256Gb as cache drive

That cache drive, with as little ram as you have, is hurting your system.

your motherboard has a realtek nic which is hurting you and that cache drive is worthless. I'd day you are getting the most performance you can get out of your system. Get anew motherboard or intel nic to fix your speed issues.

My board doesn't come with Realtek nic but an Intel 217-v nic. I'll remove the cache drive and just use it as my drive for Freenas then.

Can I remove the cache drive without affecting the system? Then transferring the OS to it from my USB drive?

My speed on my SMB/CIFS is good I think. When I transfer my ripped BluRays it goes around 85-90 MB/sec. I stream movies fine also with Plex all over.

AFP is the only slow one and on top of that with disconnection issues.
