Hello, I've decided to repurpose my old Asus laptop as a server for game design. It meets all the minimum system requirements and I've reset it to factory settings to prepare it for this purpose. I'm pretty naive with server knowledge though. With that said, do I necessarily have to have a usb or external hard drive, or can I simply just use the laptop in and of itself?

What's the idea? To store stuff (e.g. backups)?

I need a small server to run a simple multiplayer game. I don't want to get too complex yet, and would like to build up to more advanced stuff.

It's a laptop. By definition, it doesn't.

I understand a laptop isn't ideal, but I'm sure it'll get the job done. I'm not in need of something highly powered and capable at the moment.

I'm going to assume you don't know that NAS stands for Network-Attached Storage. The idea is to store data.

FreeNAS really is not what you're looking for. And, by the way, you can run the server portion on the same machine as the client stuff, assuming sufficient resources.

These are not the droids you are looking for.

FreeNAS does't really run on a laptop, you probably can't run your game server on it anyways and why not just run your server on the PC that runs the game?

If you're determined to repurpose the laptop, consider something like Ubuntu Server + webmin.

Well shoot, guess it's not what I'm looking for. Thanks for all the help. I'll check out Ubuntu Server + webmin.
