I am looking for the best way to provide drop box like functionality to my FreeNAS server while away from my local network. (PLEASE NOTE; I am not looking to sync all my files from it to multiple computers; as many guides cover this.) What I am looking for is a simple and secure way to remotely login to access the files on my FreeNAS system. I have through the grapevine, heard I may need to look into dynDNS, but am looking for a little more directed feedback before jumping into it.

Thanks

DNS service like dyndns + a vpn solution into your home network (openvpn is the best IMO)

I have found various input which agrees with what your saying, but I have no previous knowledge of what I should be careful or mindful of, etc. This is the solution i would prefer;

But again, I am a little hesitant to dive in and destroy my newly setup NAS server.

Thanks for your feedback.

What about using the built in FTP service? I use it and it works great. You can use it with a web browser but using an FTP program like FileZilla I find is much easier for me. You would use DynDNS.com or similar so that you can locate your network connection where the server resides, and then you just need to set a rule in your router to port forward the FTP port to your FreeNAS server. For a first timer it can be overwhelming but there are not that many steps.

I've never used a "Cloud" before so I'm not sure if there is something special about it compared to an FTP server.

LMAO! Quote of the year, right there.

HAHAHA. Ben, That is SUCH an understatement. That is just dang hilarious! I had to put that on my Facebook page for my IT buddies to get a good laugh at.
