Ability to edit & retain rc.conf/sysctl.conf settings

We had a simple interface to add custom /etc/rc.conf and /etc/sysctl.conf entries in FreeNAS 7. It would be nice to have a simple "setting/description/value" 3-column page that would add entries to the rc.conf and sysctl.conf files that could persist upgrades. Persistence via the database is the path I believe that would be most useful.

edit rc.conf

That ist what I need too. Actually I try to edit the rc.conf over ssh, but it seems that the setting are lost during next restart. How can I make some settings permanent in the rc.conf?

# mount -uw /
# vi /conf/base/etc/rc.conf

Those commands work fine for the current install. But exporting the config will not carry the edited rc.conf with it to my knowledge.
