5 out 6 new Toshiba HDDs Failed SMART Tests

I just upgraded my TrueNAS from Core 12.x to 13 and then to scale this past weekend. I had 5 Hitachi drives (refurbed drives that were 2 years old), 2 of which had bad sectors and were failing SMART tests. So I added an LSI Controller (LSI SAS2308 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 (rev 05)) and attached 6 brand new Toshiba NAS 300 10TB drives, created a new pool, and migrated the data. I removed the old drives and connected the new Toshiba drives to the mobo SATA ports instead of the LSI card and everything was fine yesterday while I was setting up my apps and getting everything finished.

Last night I got warnings that 5 of the 6 drives are failing SMART tests (sda, sdb, sdd, sde, sdf), with the exact same error (Seek_Error_Rate) and status of 73. Re-running sometimes gets a pass on 2 drives however 2 of the 6, never pass.

This morning I shut down and moved the drives from the mobo SATA ports back to the LSI controller, but the tests are still failing for the same drives.

I'm not sure what the issue is and if I should just open an RMA case with Toshiba, just seems odd that 5 of the 6 drives all have the same error with them being new. I think I ruled out cables and mobo ports being the issue by swapping from LSI->MOBO->LSI.

MOBO - MSI MAG B460M
CPU - Intel Core i5-10400
RAM - Teamgroup T-Force 2 x 32GB
SAS Controller - LSI SAS2308 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 (rev 05)
HDDs - Toshiba NAS 300 10TB

Since I bought these from Amazon, I am just going to return them at this point and buy Seagate Drives.

It's more than a little unusual that multiple, brand-new hard drives would be failing SMART self-tests, but that's what's happening for the one you've posted, at least. Definitely cause to return the drive.

I would also look at the PSU and SATA cables (speaking from experience ).

As the saying goes: Good judgement comes from experience. And experience comes from bad judgement.

Amazon could also be the problem. It is a common problem that the drives are not handled with care at Amazon, especially when shipping from Amazon to the customer. Often the drives are simply thrown into the parcel without sufficient padding to protect them.
This could also be the reason why 5 out of 6 are defect.
I personally will never ever buy harddrives at Amazon again.

I have to agree with @thomas-hn , unfortunately. So much so, that I have stopped buying HDDs from amazon (unless they are retail).

They were also refurb drives - now question is, were they actual refurb or just returns to amazon someone else had and they put them back up as refurbs (if sold by amazon)

Something Amazon can be great for, other things, stick to computer stores if you can.
