Local dd in the pool (12x2tb 6x2 striped mirrors) I can achieve 600-700MB/s write and 500-600MB/s read (with compression off because 0's compress easily). Using AFP, I can achieve about 680MB/s write and 180MB/s read. It is not just that it is filling up the cache. Local transfers and scrubs on the pool run at about 700MB/s, and when writing to the pool with a large file over AFP, the discs each show about 100MB/s writing, so I'm not just writing to the cache very rapidly and then flushing to the disks.

Hardware specs in sig, Running the latest 9.3 stable release.

Are there any tunables for AFP that may increase my performance? I am very happy with the write performance, and I can deal with the read performance, just would rather figure out what the issue is before fully implementing my new network setup in a closet in my next apartment.

Yes. Got similar if not slower results.

If you are using afp and 10gbe, I am guessing you are looking at large files? Try a big block either 512 or 1m.
