Got some parts extra from an old build which is way better than whats being installed today , going from 12gb ram to 32, Ryzen 5 instead of 1st gen i5.

what precations do i need to take prior to upgrading? It's been a while since last time and it's really a "set and forget" setup.

Do i need to reinstall the freenas or can i simply replace the HW and expect it to work? (running version 11.3 if i recall correctly)

There's a moderate probability FreeBSD 11 will not work with your new modern hardware. I would definitely upgrade to TN CORE 13.0.

If you do not have many services, jails, shares etc. configured but the setup is rather simple, I would also consider a clean install on a new boot device to make sure TN CORE will boot and work on the new hardware, then move the data pool disks and then manually recreate the settings and shares.

Be care about jail type. Between 11.2>11.3 the jails changed to iocage type. Which is hard/impossible to migrate.
I also make 11.2 to 13 upgrade and definitely better then the stepped upgrade. Because of not just HW issues mentioned by Patric above but also no direct upgrade from 11 to 13 you need to jump few interim versions which is already outdated so lack of support.
