Arch to TrueNAS

I have a computer with several hard disks (one for the system with BTRFS and the data disks with ZFS) using Arch Linux. It is a powerful computer but since some time ago I only use it as a NAS, what would be the advantage of switching from Arch Linux to TrueNAS, could I keep the data stored on the data disks (ZFS)?

My condolences.

Well, at the cost of setting up TrueNAS, it's probably easier to maintain mid-to-long term.

Yes, but permissions do not translate well between ZFS on Linux and ZFS on FreeBSD. You may have to redo them if you're using ACLs.

I have another question, what is the best (in terms of data transmission speed) way to connect TrueNAS on a PC to a MAC mini?

Also, you need to be aware that TrueNAS is an appliance. It is not possible to install arbitrary software other than what is supported. Quite a few people who switched over fell into the trap to believe they could also install their favorite tools/applications.

I am currently using a Mac mini as my everyday PC and the PC (running Arch Linux) only functions as a data server (as if it were a NAS). So I am interested in using an operating system (on the PC) that maximizes data transfer speed/reliability.

I applaud your bravery.

A rolling release Linux distro is a shaky host for ZFS storage. Especially important data.

The fact that on a live system you can have the ZFS modules (of an older version) loaded, meanwhile the ZFS utils (zfs-utils) gets updated to a newer version is disconcerting...

You're not wrong, but the breakage tends to be more annoying than dangerous. Stuff like a specific subcommand of zfs (I forget which) failing due to the kernel interface changing, without actually doing anything.

10+ GbE, though you may need an external NIC for the Mac, depending on the model...
