I have to say I have never felt so incompetent as I do trying to set up FreeNAS! Anyhow, I now have a simple test system up and running, one pool with a single disk (Tank1) in it. After several hours I have email working but I'm stuck again with three questions:

1. How do I set up system monitoring

2. I can see Tank1 from my Windows PC but I don't have the right permissions to write to it, please how do I do this.

3. I have created a User called 'Mac' but I'm only able to log into root, should I be able to log into Mac and if so how?

Please don't worry, I have found yet another guide so I will work through that before posing any more uneducated questions

If you mean in the web GUI, no--only root can log in there. But you can give permissions to that user to connect to shares and have access to files there.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out Uncle Fester's guide (link in my sig). The graphics aren't 100% up-to-date, but they're pretty close, and it's a pretty good guide for a newbie.

Thanks @danb35, I have just finished setting up FreeNAS using Uncle Festers Guide which is excellent, I have gone through each step meticulously and all is well.......except!

Although I can see my newly created Network Drive Z: on my Windows PC I cannot write anything to it as I do not seem to have the correct permissions. One problem is I'm not sure whether these are Windows permissions or FreeNas permissions. I have followed the guide in detail so the FreeNAS permissions should be correct but Windows only shows 'special' permissions being set and will not let me enable read/write permissions.

Sadly I am stuck again!

First of all, did you create a dataset to share and not try to share the top pool? As far as I know the latter does not work.
