After replacing a Disk all other disks are shown as degraded except the replacement is this normal?

As you may have noticed the system is resilvering again, it started this process on its own - I do not know what triggered it - I will keep you updated once it is finished.

Regarding the RAM: Well I spent about 60 EUR on 16 GB, that does not hurt too much and doubles the NAS' RAM capacity, so I think it's a good thing.

I will test the RAM from the NAS in another System just to get clarity about possible reasons for those errors, this however will take some time, since I do not have immediate access to another System that run with DDR3.

Thanks so far and kind regards.

What started the resilver this time are checksum errors on gptid/d81e36b2-1a9a-11e6-b0c5-10c37b4dfcfa, I think. You can use "geom PART list" to find out which drive has that partition ID.

I does not tell me that much since the rawuuid ending in fcfa is shown for every drive.

I keep you updated once the scrub finishes.

Looks like ada0. It’s the beginning of the Gptid that varies, not the end. Since that’s the only drive with checksum errors, if I read this right at least, and smart doesn’t indicate it failing, maybe take a look at its cable and port. You could power FreeNAS down and swap out the cable just to be sure. If you have a free SATA port, maybe move it to that at the same time. It’s drive designation may change then but its gptid won’t.

speaking of: How are these drives connected? To motherboard SATA ports, or to an add-in card? If the latter, what kind?

What still gets me is that a single error wouldn’t cause corruption. It’s got to be two at least for any given entry, since you have single parity.

And we still don’t know what in the system is causing that.

I am using the following Mainboard:

H97i-Plus from Asus

The drives are connected directly to the Mainboard which only has 4 SATA ports, so it is not possible to switch to another port.

The new RAM is arriving today so I can switch the RAM at least. ... I could try new cables as well, a question in this regard: Does i matter which HDD is connected to which SATA-Port?

Assuming ada0 is connected to SATA0, ada1 is sconnected to SATA1 and so forth, when I replace the cables and be some 'mistake' connect ada0 to SATA1, will that mess up the pool or doen't it matter which drive is connected to which port?

Kind Regards

No it does not. FreeNAS uses gptids for this reason, so it doesn’t matter which port a drive is connected to.
The only way to figure out what drive “ada0” refers to, by the way, is by serial number. Don’t go by port number, that might not match.

OK that is great to know, so when I replace a disk in the future I simply look for the serial number and reconnect everything as I see fit.

When I replaced the last drive I took the utmost care to connect everything exactly in the same way. - Good to know that this is not necessary.

EDIT: Somewhat offtopic: I have 8 SSD lying around, is it advisable to use SSDs to build an all flash NAS or are there any drawbacks?

EDIT2: Here are the resulte of today's scrub:

So some errors remain. - That means the pool is permanently damaged, needs to be destroyed an rebuild?

That means the pool is permanently damaged, needs to be destroyed an rebuild?

I believe so, yes. Did you ever find out what caused the errors in the first place?

Theoretically you could also rsync or send/recv everything in windowsshare into a new dataset, as much as it’ll let you, and then destroy windowsshare, and that should clear it.
Or destroy it, scrub, recreate it, and bring all data back in from backup.

I have 8 SSD lying around, is it advisable to use SSDs to build an all flash NAS or are there any drawbacks?

No drawbacks that I am aware of. Different thread for that use case maybe, though.

No I did not find out what causes those errors. I switched out the RAM-Modules, haven't been able to test the old ones yet.

Interesting thing is, that the System-Tab still tells me there are 8 GB of RAM although I have 16 installed.

I have been copying Data from the Share to other media, since of some Data I had no backups elsewhere. - This seemingly takes forever and maybe completes today.

Once this is finished I will update the FreeNAS to a current stable version and than recreate the share, and keep an eye on it regarding those errors.

Should they reappear the only possible option I can think of is, that the motherboard or CPU have been damaged somehow, in this case the NAS has died since I do not have the components to make any replacements. I'll keep you posted.

Mmm. This doesn't look good.

Just to be clear, you've confirmed that the disks are not SMR disks? SMR disks are known to fail under the strain of a rebuild, though usually this also presents as other problems such as incredibly slow resilvering.

And this is not through something like an LSI HBA that could be overheating? That is one of the most common ways for bitspew to end up in a pool.

It would be very helpful if you would post a system manifest. The forum rules, conveniently linked at the top of every page in red, provide some guidelines for information that you should provide in order to make it easier to help you.

I have posted my system specification in post #7 of this thread.

There is no LSI HBA involved all drives are connected directly to the mainboard.

that the System-Tab still tells me there are 8 GB of RAM although I have 16 installed.

The only way that can happen is if there's an issue with the RAM or the motherboard. Once your copy completes, it's worth figuring out whether a slot on the board is bad, check that the DIMMs are properly seated, and once you see all 16GB or have figured out why you don't, run a memtest86 or similar test on the new RAM. Yes your FreeNAS will be down for the duration: But if you can't trust your hardware, you can't use it meaningfully anyway.

OK my bad one of the DIMMs was not installed correctly, those slots on this ITX-Mobo are simply awkwardly to handle. Now all 16 GB show as they should. I updated the NAS to the most recent STABLE version (Version:FreeNAS-11.3-U4.1 ) I destroyed the pool and created a new one.

Here I encountered the issue that the NAS told me

Code:
Mixing disks of different sizes in a VDEV is not allowed

See first post in this thread for a picture.

However in my GUI there was a checkbox that said "force" so I checked this and could create the pool anyway.

Is this something that could backfire at a later date?

Added an SMB share and now could copy back the data. ... And yes before you beat me, I will test the old modules, this however would require me to occupy hardware that is in use elsewhere (monitor keyboard). So I will do so, when I am away for a weekend so memtest can run like 48+ hours. I hope some errors will turn up in the old RAM, otherwise the cause of error is up to everybodies best guess. Thanks again and I keep you posted.

EDIT: How oftern should I do scrubs / resilvering etc. ?
Where and how can I setup and most importantly test E-Mail-notifications in case something goes wrong in the future?

No. It's warning you because you won't get the full capacity of the larger drive, until all drives in the vdev have been replaced with larger ones. You know that, so choosing "force" to get past that warning is perfectly fine.

Scrub: I have mine set to a 35 day threshold. That way, they run every 5 weeks.

Email: System->EMail. Keep in mind that if you use 2FA with your email provider (which you really should), you'll need an "app password" for this alert email functionality.

OK thank you, I set mine to the same settings, so scrubbing will take place ever 35 days. I set up the E-Mail and send a Test-Mail which worked just fine.

So I guess this is it for now, I am copying back the data and I will test the old RAMs from 11th - 13th September, I am away for that weekend I do not need the machine that does the testing. This should give me a solid result to determine if something is wrong with those or not. Should the latter be the case I will keep an eye on the NAS because than the cause of error remains undetermined.

Thanks again for all your help and support so far.

EDIT: Just did a smartctl -x and got the feeling that the output is now significantly longer than previously.
