Fry's no longer carries SAS cables (who knew?) so I have to wait until Monday to get the mini-SAS SFF-8087 cables. I entertained myself by finding a lifetime's worth of old drives and loading them into the caddies.

Don't get all excited -- we've hit the dregs of my stash. After about drive 24, we're hitting some ancient stuff. Drives 47 & 48 are Seagate Barracuda 300GB circa 2005. I wonder if they'll even spin up...Oh lord please stop. There is only so much HDD porn I can take at one time.

That must be all those drives because mine, with 16 drives, is 'only' pulling 215 watts, while transcoding a video for Plex.and is "only" using 900W.
I have the 12U version as well. It's great.@nightshade00013
I bought a startech 42u open 4-post rack from newegg for something like $200.00 and have been happy with it. No doors, but it holds equipment and has some cable management brackets. Came in a tiny box, but it extremely sturdy and has casters.

The price is good, and I keep a close eye on them because I don't really trust them. I also have a couple spares in each size sitting on the shelf.I am still a bit turned off on seagate drives myself.
I used a manual screwdriver too... It isn't so bad, there are only two screws for each drive with a couple more plastic posts to ensure proper alignment.Geez, a manual screwdriver? You're going to get carpal tunnel like that!
I've had a bunch (okay, 12) of seagate archive 8tb drives running for 2+ years without a single failure in one of my NAS. The 5tb are awful, they seem to fail annually. The price is good, and I keep a close eye on them because I don't really trust them. I also have a couple spares in each size sitting on the shelf.
I have some other stuff to build so putting together a wood cabinet is just as easy plus I can place a filter to keep it all clean. Already had two rail's floating around and bought another. Probably go pick up some materials today to build the framework and then get measurements to enclose it all. Only thing I wish I had is a table saw with that I probably would just buy all the materials today but I want to try and have some of the cuts super straight. Already got the casters as well and they are rated up to 250 lbs each so I don't have to worry about overloading it ever. Will end up being 36U tall inside and so far the cases seem to be pretty heavy for what I have and if I ever move I intend to just leave it all in the rack and roll it out the door.
Plus if I have to assemble it anyway I may as well get by cheaper. I could build out what you are looking at for about 75 bucks. The complete outside adds another 50 using 3/4 inch material.
I hate to hear that. I have 4 of the 5TB drives in my NAS for my backup pool. The 5tb are awful, they seem to fail annually.
The weight will not matter for me. I bought casters that support 250lbs each. My aquarium that was posted earlier in the thread was on casters as well. Worked at a place at one point that had great big skates with 15 or 20 casters on each one and we could roll houses along the factory floor with them as they went from one stage to the next. Was just offering an easy solution.
The last one I built was from 2x4 and 3/4" decking for the sides and top. Was waaaaaaay too heavy, hence the open frame. You could build what I have out of 2x4... but adding 18" to the depth in less than 5 minutes is worth the $$ :)
I've been buying them at bestbuy and newegg and shucking them from USB enclosures, they're extremely cheap at $169.00 for 8tb and $119 for 5tb. It doesn't matter which version you buy, all 3.5" have the same drives but some come with a usb hub or a shiny case...I hate to hear that. I have 4 of the 5TB drives in my NAS for my backup pool.
