I am thinking of building a FreeNAS server to store all of our data and I would like something that is rather quiet and have good array such as Raid-Z2. I find Skylake to be an interesting platform, so I would like to go with that. I would like to use it for backing up and storing files, but I am also interested in Plex and what not. Even though we might get a 4K tv later, I would eventually upgrade to do 4K, so that would not be an issue. I would prefer it to be seamless in terms of being able to transfer files and a low power server would be nice, but I know that the Xeon E3 does not consume that much more power and has 4 Cores. I think VM's would be nice, but not sure if I would need to add even more RAM as VM's take up ram and processing power. I also want to run a Jail such as Transmission, as well as crashplan. Is it a good idea to have a separate Jail drive? I have seen people use their storage f0r jails, but is it necessary?

CPU: Intel Xeon e3-1230 v5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...G3636&cm_re=e3-1230_v5-_-19-117-613-_-Product - Read that this is a good CPU for freeNAS for the v3 version, so the v5 version would probably suit us. I am also considering the 1240 as price seems to be not much more.
Motherboard: SuperMicro X11SSH-F-O
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...3182995&cm_re=x11ssh-f-_-13-182-995-_-Product - seems to be a very fully featured motherboard and like that it supports 8 drives without the need to flash a controller into IT mode and enough ports for a boot drive and a m.2 port that could work for a cache. I also find the IPMI feature to be a selling point, so I can remotely monitor the server.
RAM: 2x Samsung M391A2K43BB1-CPB
http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=D416GE21S - Thought 32GB ram is generous for a 6x6TB array and the ability to add up to 64GB should I need extra RAM. I believe this is on the QVL for that supermicro board, so I wanted something that would just simply work.
HDD: 6x WD RED
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LO3KR96/?tag=ozlp-20 - I have researched various drives and this seems to be a good option? I think the red pros are a waste of money, and we only have a gigabit network, so no need for the red pro. I also believe the red pro's also waste more heat, and I want this server to run cool. I want to run these in Raid Z2 and I have researched that 6x is a good size for Raid Z2. I have had a bad experience with Seagate and really do not want to buy one of their drives again.
Case: Fractal Node 804
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352047 - This case seems to be vert small compact and I like that is quiet and good airflow. I am open to other cases such as the Define R5.
I have a Define XL R2 for my desktop and I really like that case.
Case: Fractal Define R5
Boot drive: SanDisk 120 GB SSD
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S9Q9UKS/?tag=ozlp-20 - Not the best SSD but it is just to boot up FreeNAS and also Skylake cannot boot from a USB for now, so this might have to do.
PSU: Seasonic S12G 550
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FW6EICS/?tag=ozlp-20 - Seems like on the forums that this is a good PSU? I am not sure if I really nemed that much power, but 8 SATA connectors should be enough for 1 SSD and 6 drives.

I would not mind any feedback and I hope to eventually get to build a freenas and keep my data safe, as I have had a hard drive go bad on me due to a faulty Seagate drive. I have looked at the ideal components and I am willing to experiment a little on skylake, but people seem to be happy with theirs, so maybe I should take advantage of it. I bought a X99 board when they were new, so I am really open to it.

I find Skylake to be an interesting platform, so I would like to go with that.
Just recently a few builds have been posted on these suggestions, yet there are very few reports on what really works. I've a Skylake setup on order myself. It is a bit of a gamble. I guess the point of not updating the cyberjock hardware recomendations yet is partly because the skylake platform is simply not tested and proven enough. Remember current FreeNAS versions do not run the latest BSD software. Until FreeNAS 10 in expected in may, references on how well skylake works on BSD, has little relevance in relation to how it would work on current BSD version ran by FreeNAS.

Is it a good idea to have a separate Jail drive?
I've seen some recomendations that people have separate jail drives. I've no idea if that is because of convenience, or fragmentation issues or what other reason there might be. I'd go for one, since you seem to have plans for several jails. Other than that, you can always back up your jail drive to the main pool.

Other than that, seems like you are on the same page as me as far as readings go.

Cheers /

I am thinking of getting the R5 case instead as that seems to be easy to work with. Cable management is pretty good and not bad. I am wondering if I should go with 8x6TB in Z3 and perhaps upping RAM to 64GB. Of course I think 6x6TB in Z2 might be better as I can use less ram and not sure if I want to add another card or use the M.2 for the boot drive or Jails. A separate card for a jail drive is not really want I want to do.

+1
perhaps upping RAM to 64GB
CAnnot see why there is any reason to do that right out of the box, (other than someone else pays right now, and not for future upgrades).

hell - if 32gb additional ram is within budget and another couple of drives.... ...then your budget doesnt dictate the limitations of your use case... rather the opposite.
Then the question is - how FAR overkill is enough overkill? ;)

Well extra ram might not be in our budget so I am staying for 32 gb for now. I also changed case for fractal r5.

I also like the 1240 e3 v5 as that cpu is not that much more on the newegg configurator ($20.00 more).
