I am thinking of building a FreeNAS server to store all of our data and I would like something that is rather quiet and have good array such as Raid-Z2. I find Skylake to be an interesting platform, so I would like to go with that. I would like to use it for backing up and storing files, but I am also interested in Plex and what not. Even though we might get a 4K tv later, I would eventually upgrade to do 4K, so that would not be an issue. I would prefer it to be seamless in terms of being able to transfer files and a low power server would be nice, but I know that the Xeon E3 does not consume that much more power and has 4 Cores. I think VM's would be nice, but not sure if I would need to add even more RAM as VM's take up ram and processing power. I also want to run a Jail such as Transmission, as well as crashplan. Is it a good idea to have a separate Jail drive? I have seen people use their storage f0r jails, but is it necessary?
CPU: Intel Xeon e3-1230 v5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...G3636&cm_re=e3-1230_v5-_-19-117-613-_-Product - Read that this is a good CPU for freeNAS for the v3 version, so the v5 version would probably suit us. I am also considering the 1240 as price seems to be not much more.
Motherboard: SuperMicro X11SSH-F-O
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...3182995&cm_re=x11ssh-f-_-13-182-995-_-Product - seems to be a very fully featured motherboard and like that it supports 8 drives without the need to flash a controller into IT mode and enough ports for a boot drive and a m.2 port that could work for a cache. I also find the IPMI feature to be a selling point, so I can remotely monitor the server.
RAM: 2x Samsung M391A2K43BB1-CPB
http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=D416GE21S - Thought 32GB ram is generous for a 6x6TB array and the ability to add up to 64GB should I need extra RAM. I believe this is on the QVL for that supermicro board, so I wanted something that would just simply work.
HDD: 6x WD RED
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LO3KR96/?tag=ozlp-20 - I have researched various drives and this seems to be a good option? I think the red pros are a waste of money, and we only have a gigabit network, so no need for the red pro. I also believe the red pro's also waste more heat, and I want this server to run cool. I want to run these in Raid Z2 and I have researched that 6x is a good size for Raid Z2. I have had a bad experience with Seagate and really do not want to buy one of their drives again.
Case: Fractal Node 804
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352047 - This case seems to be vert small compact and I like that is quiet and good airflow. I am open to other cases such as the Define R5.I have a Define XL R2 for my desktop and I really like that case.
Case: Fractal Define R5
Boot drive: SanDisk 120 GB SSD
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S9Q9UKS/?tag=ozlp-20 - Not the best SSD but it is just to boot up FreeNAS and also Skylake cannot boot from a USB for now, so this might have to do.
PSU: Seasonic S12G 550
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FW6EICS/?tag=ozlp-20 - Seems like on the forums that this is a good PSU? I am not sure if I really nemed that much power, but 8 SATA connectors should be enough for 1 SSD and 6 drives.
I would not mind any feedback and I hope to eventually get to build a freenas and keep my data safe, as I have had a hard drive go bad on me due to a faulty Seagate drive. I have looked at the ideal components and I am willing to experiment a little on skylake, but people seem to be happy with theirs, so maybe I should take advantage of it. I bought a X99 board when they were new, so I am really open to it.
