My pi 2's running rasplex do not require any transcoding at all from the server. Only the clients connecting over the internet do for my setup. It doesn't care how BIG the files are....but what bitrate the device that is streaming the data to can handle.

Because that's Plex to Plex... as long as the receiving Plex has sufficient bandwidth and CPU to not request transcoding, you're good. But, if you're streaming to things that are more format-limited, and certainly to any mobile device, you're guaranteed to be transcoding at least some of the time.

I know?

Seems like I remember reading that Plex also needs to transcode anytime subtitles are used. Looks like my options are Xeon or bust.

As far as memory goes, 32GB exceeds the 1GB:1TB ratio for my system, but doesn't take into account any VM needs. On the one hand, I am mildly concerned about shooting myself in the foot with only a 32GB max board; but on the other hand, seems like most folks here are pretty cool with them.

Also, if I read the specs right, the 1150's max out at 32GB. So, if I were to get a board with higher memory capacity, I'd also need to bump up my CPU even more.

I run 20-3tb drives on 32gb RAM along with a lot of jails.

Good to know. Makes me feel better. Nothing beats good old fashioned experience.

I've got my eye on a Xeon E3-1276 v3. With all the help I've gotten here, I think I'm in good shape with the setup. Now I just gotta scrape enough nickels to make it happen.

In looking over the specs again, I notice the Xeon E3-1276 v3 supports memory @ 1.5V. Does this mean I should NOT get 1.35V memory?

I had started ordering a set of Crucial CT2KIT102472BD160B, but maybe I should get the CT2KIT102472BA160B

All Haswell CPUs support 1.35V RAM.

Sweet.

Sometimes I think I'm just a monkey playing with legos. I can get the pieces stuck together some of the time, but really have no idea what I'm doing.

Well, it's a done deal. Next step: build, test, pray.
