Well, I was looking for some sort of free NAS software solution with a web management panel.
FreeNAS is not appropriate in your use case. I do not see any reason that FreeNAS is the right choice for you here.
You are using only one disk (this removes the ability to protect your data as there is no redundancy), which is the biggest benefit to using FreeNAS. The overhead associated with running FreeNAS is much greater than just about any other solution out there, for such a simple set up.

There are other options for a NAS software with web based management:
NAS4FREE
OpenMediaVault
UNRaid
RockStor
Zentyal
just to name a few

Thank you. I'll surely check these out. Just one question: all of these let me use the 500GB disk for storage?

I don't understand why you keep asking this. You can use whatever disk you like for storage, in any system.

The closest cousin to FreeNAS would be Nas4Free. It runs from a USB and does some of the same things FreeNAS does, but with a much smaller hardware and system requirement.

@AwesomeNick566, I think that ultimately setting up a share in Windows 7 would be easier, than trying to manage FreeNAS or NAS4Free and creating proper shares there.
