Hi all,

I created some AFP shares, that also have CIFS shares.

The actual disk is using mac permissions, all atached to one user which i log in as.

I'm getting this issue in the screenshot where if i go away from the freenas location... the drives will disappear.

how can i fix it? please lmk if u need more info.

It's not really addressing your question directly, but I have found NFS shares to be the most stable between FreeNAS and OS X.

Do NFS shares appear in the Finder > Shared ? And do they require login prompt ?

Also for the file permissions, are you using UNIX for the dataset?

No, you have to Go | Connect to Server in Finder, using the protocol, server name and full path of the share, but fortunately you can tell Finder to save them for later. For example:

You can also put them in your Login Items to automatically mount when you login.
do they require login prompt ?
No.
are you using UNIX for the dataset?
Yes. OS X is built on FreeBSD.

Hi all,
I created some AFP shares, that also have CIFS shares.

I think the manual strongly recommends against creating multiple shares for one dataset. Many people use AFP exclusively for file sharing and do not have a problem. However, that leaves a problem if you really need two kinds of sharing for the same data.

I have windows and mac client and use CIFS with Unix permissions. Has been working quite well for some time now. As Robert mentioned, you can set it up to automount which I do, but it will also show up under shared where you can just click, and provided your username and password for your mac login are the same as your login for the share then no need to authenticate. Same goes for windows user, just add networked folder for easy access.

I should add that I also heard about the suggestion to use a single protocol for a given share. Mac is phasing out AFP for CIFS, so it made sense to me. The only thing you can't do is use for Time Machine like you can AFP, but there are workarounds for that.
